“Stand Up Australia” is the title of 60 minutes latest report on the dangers of excessive sitting and lack of movement whilst working. Melbourne based heart and diabetes institute Baker IDI have been working hard to demonstrate the negative effects sitting down has on our health. Their research shows that most hard-working Australians on average sit down for longer each day than we sleep and is playing havoc with our health. This increasing trend is becoming the cause of more and more health problems within the working class and is slowly making its way into our upcoming generations. Increased risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even cancer have been linked to excessive sitting throughout your day, with research claiming sitting can be as bad as smoking.
Fortunately, as the report demonstrates, there is a solution. Studies have shown that regular sitting and standing whilst at work can break up the sedentary lifestyle that we as a generation have become so accustomed to. Just a few hours a day of standing on the job can benefit your health enormously. Watch the full report here to learn more.
